Meatball's Story:
Meatball came to us in early November as an owner surrender along with another dog from the same home, Jack (a Boston Terrier). While they arrived together, they were not a bonded pair. Jack has since found his adoptive home, while Meatball continues to wait for his furever home.
This boy is the happiest, 2 year old, pittie, low rider you have ever seen. All he wants are hugs and kisses and belly rubs. We immediately called a previous adopter to come meet him and “Love was in the air”. The previous adopter has a difficult Camp alumni bully breed and the introductions would be ongoing until Meatball could go home. We scheduled a neuter for the following Wednesday, in the meantime we took him to SonoPath for an entire body ultrasound and echocardiogram. (We have an arrangement with SonoPath-we provide the rescue dogs and they teach people from all over the world how to use their machines. We get to let our adopters know that the dogs that go to SonoPath are certainly healthy, or it alerts us to problems with our dogs we can then get treated. Win Win!). We have never been so glad that the SonoPath weekend was before Meatball’s neuter and he got to go!! Meatball had vet records come in with him, nothing was flagged, but the moment the Vet at SonoPath listened to his heart he knew Meatball was in trouble: a 4 out of 5 heart murmur. An echocardiogram was done and severe pulmonic stenosis was the diagnosis. Meatball was immediately placed on restricted exercise, Pocono Peak was contacted as medication was recommended and it was dispensed. He is now stabilized on the medication, so it is time to proceed. We contacted the previous adopter and let him know what the diagnosis was and the fact that Meatball is going to need a cardiologist and pulmonic balloon valvuloplasty. His heart is in good shape, there are no signs of congestive heart failure, and this procedure will most likely fix the problem! This is a very expensive consult and procedure, we understand why the previous adopter does not want to adopt him in this condition, so we have to do a fundraiser to help this boy!! Step in: The Lakeside Saylorsburg Restaurant. They have agreed to help us try to raise the funds to get Meatball to the cardiologist and have this procedure. We have called all the big vet hospitals and most do not do this procedure, or were booked out until the end of March. Drum roll please, we found a cardiologist who does this procedure at Quakertown Veterinary Clinic and has openings in January. We will be very transparent about the vet bill once we get his appointment set. The consult alone is $656. That does not include whatever procedures he may need done or redone in order to do the surgery.
In the meantime, we would love to get this happy boy into a foster home. He is becoming kennel stressed which is not good for him at all. Girl dogs do not seem to bother him, boy dogs are selective (it may be because he is not neutered and cannot be in this condition). Dog meets would have to happen. We have no idea about cats. We are so hoping that all local supporters will decide not to cook and instead come to dinner on January 16th at The Lakeside. It is a Friday night and there will be music for your dining pleasure. Dinner will consist of some sort of dish containing meatballs, thus the name, “Meatballs for Meatball”. We are working on the menu presently. For those of you out of town, if you are so inclined to help Meatball, we would be so grateful if you send a monetary donation, mark it for Meatball, through our website: www.camppapillon.org.
